I brought in my grandfather's Seiko 5 — a watch I had been keeping in a drawer for years without knowing what state the movement was in. The assessment was thorough, and the written report was genuinely useful. Farid explained the condition clearly and gave me a fair sense of what the full overhaul would involve. I went ahead with it and the watch now runs within a couple of seconds a day. Very satisfied.

The crown on my Tissot had been stiff for the better part of a year — winding it was starting to feel like a chore. I left the watch with Jam Permata and it was returned in about ten days with a smooth, properly functioning crown and a short note about what was done. Pricing was as stated, no additions. The workshop is a bit small and quiet but that suits the kind of work they do, I think.

Had a full overhaul done on a Citizen automatic I have worn daily for about eight years. Knew it was overdue but kept putting it off. Jam Permata showed me the timing results before and after — there was a real difference. What I appreciated most was not being pressured. When I asked whether a particular part needed replacing or could wait, I got an honest answer rather than an upsell.

My late father left me an old Omega that I was hesitant to take anywhere without some idea of what I was dealing with. The vintage assessment at Jam Permata was exactly what I needed. The written report was detailed and honest — it mentioned what was in good shape and what would need attention eventually without overstating anything. I found that reassuring. I will return for the overhaul when I am ready.

The overhaul on my ETA-based watch took around three weeks, which I had been told at the outset, so no surprises there. When I collected it, I was given a sheet showing the amplitude and beat error results. The rate has been consistently good in the weeks since. My only note is that I had to follow up once for a status update — a proactive message mid-service would have been a nice touch. Overall a solid job.

Referred here by someone from the KL collectors group. Brought a vintage Japanese piece for assessment. The experience matched what I had heard — careful, written, no fuss. Encik Farid knew the calibre and mentioned some context about its production era that was interesting. I went ahead with a targeted cleaning of the affected area and the piece is running again. Will be back for a fuller service in time.

Case Studies

A closer look at a few services

Case Study 01 · Full Overhaul

A daily-wear automatic losing 3–4 minutes a day

Challenge

The client had worn a mid-range Swiss automatic every day for six years without servicing. It had begun losing significant time — sometimes three or four minutes daily — and occasionally stopped overnight.

Service

Full overhaul. Movement disassembled, ultrasonically cleaned, mainspring replaced (worn), and reassembled with fresh lubricants. Calibration machine testing showed poor amplitude before service; improved markedly after.

Outcome

Watch returned within three weeks running at +4 seconds per day in dial-up position, within manufacturer specification. Client confirmed consistent performance over the following month. Completed: May 2025.

Case Study 02 · Vintage Assessment

An inherited pocket watch of uncertain condition

Challenge

A family had inherited a Swiss pocket watch estimated to be from the 1940s. No one knew whether it was functional, what condition the movement was in, or whether any previous repair had been carried out. They wanted to understand the piece before making any decisions.

Service

Vintage assessment. Movement examined without disassembly. Case, dial, and crystal reviewed. Evidence of a previous partial service was noted. Written report produced describing current condition of each element and care that would bring the watch back to running order.

Outcome

Family received a clear written account of the watch's state. No work was recommended beyond what was genuinely needed. The family chose to proceed with a focused overhaul several weeks later. The watch now runs. Completed: June 2025.

Case Study 03 · Crown & Winding Repair

A commuter's watch with a crown that no longer held its position

Challenge

A client's Japanese mechanical watch had a crown that refused to stay in the winding position — it would slip out of the click when pulled. Setting the time had become unreliable. The watch was otherwise running well.

Service

Crown and stem repair. The stem was found worn at the groove that engages with the setting lever click spring. Stem replaced; crown renewed and tested across winding and setting positions. Area cleaned before reassembly.

Outcome

Watch returned with fully functional crown in approximately twelve days. Client noted that the winding action felt noticeably lighter than before the wear had developed. No further issues reported. Completed: May 2025.

"I was not sure whether to bother bringing in an old watch that I hadn't worn in years. The assessment gave me enough information to decide, and the process was gentle throughout. I appreciated being treated with patience rather than efficiency."
